Half-timbered Houses

Auxerre is a medieval city that still bears many traces of its history, especially through the half-timbered houses that line its cobbled streets. Built using wood from the Morvan Forest, these houses were originally made entirely of wood during the medieval period, a material that was abundant and easy to work with. However, wood also meant fire, and after numerous fires over the centuries, residents began rebuilding in stone instead of wood. They preserved the medieval style by rebuilding in stone and adding wooden frames typical of the period. This heritage continues to captivate visitors, as many of these houses, sometimes painted in vibrant colours, are beautifully preserved, reflecting the city's rich history and charm!
