Hennebont’s Medieval Festival

In Hennebont, the medieval festival is about a lot more than spotting the occasional knight between two sausage stalls. It was created to bring the town’s heritage roaring back to life—and frankly, Hennebont already has half the scenery built in, with its ramparts, fortified gateways, and historic center. Every two years, the town transforms into a giant time machine—mercifully without the plague.

Medieval camps spring up in the streets, craftspeople set to work, musicians and dancers take over the squares, and the program fills with combat demonstrations, costumed parades, and equestrian shows. And you don’t have to stand on the sidelines. Visitors are encouraged to dress up too, which means that on a single street you might pass a nobleman, a washerwoman, three very Breton Vikings, and a child dressed as a dragon.

Traditional craftsmanship is a big part of the fun as well. Blacksmiths, artisans, market stalls, and demonstrations of old skills turn the town center into something that feels remarkably close to a medieval marketplace. The equestrian performances and combat displays are among the most eagerly awaited events, so if you get the chance to catch one, take it.

But what really makes the festival work is the atmosphere. Music fills the streets, costumed characters wander through the crowds, food aromas drift between the stalls, and the energy of the volunteers pushes the whole celebration far beyond simple historical reenactment. Over the years, the festival has become one of Hennebont’s signature traditions.

For its 30th-anniversary edition, it brought together around 130 craftspeople, 30,000 visitors, and nearly 200 volunteers and performers. Here, the Middle Ages aren’t just confined to the history books—they spill out into the streets, sing, clash swords, fill the stalls with handmade goods, and above all, throw a very good party—while Hennebont, for one weekend, seems to slip naturally back into another age.
