Hennebont War Memorial

Take a moment to stop in front of Hennebont’s war memorial. At first glance, this solemn granite obelisk may seem like a traditional monument to the dead—but its story is really about an entire community coming together. Unveiled on September 4, 1921, it was funded in large part by the people of Hennebont themselves.

More than 65% of the cost came from a major public fundraising effort launched after 1914, and an inscription carved into the stone still records that collective contribution today. The inauguration began on a solemn note, with a blessing and the placement of a crucifix donated by war widows. But after the ceremony, the mood changed completely.

The day turned into a full community celebration, with a banquet, a concert, a movie screening, and even a public dance. Take a closer look at the monument and you’ll find an unusual mix of Republican, military, and religious symbols: a palm frond, a sword, the crucifix, cast-iron plaques, and six metal artillery shells. Those plaques carry the names of 340 soldiers from Hennebont who died during World War I.

The names of local victims of the wars in Indochina and North Africa were added later. But the detail with perhaps the best story is perched right at the top: the bronze rooster. Originally, it stood proudly with one foot planted on a German spiked helmet.

When German troops occupied the town during World War II, they apparently found that little piece of symbolism rather less amusing. They ordered the helmet removed from the sculpture. And for something made of solid granite, this monument has done a surprising amount of traveling.

It was moved several meters across the square in the 1980s, and during the recent redevelopment of Place Foch, it had to move yet again. This time, the entire monument was secured inside a massive steel framework nicknamed an “iron sarcophagus” before being shifted into place. Now, after more than a century, several wars, and more than one change of address, it seems the old obelisk may finally have found a permanent home.
