House of the Knights of St John

To your right, you'll see a beautiful house modelled after Venetian palaces. This 17th-century beauty, known as the House of the Knights of St John, was designed by architect Albert Schmidt, to whom we owe several other townhouses in the center of Colmar. Interestingly, the one you see here is actually a reconstruction of the original building that once stood here. It was torn down in the 19th century and then rebuilt exactly as it was to recreate this exceptional piece of Italian Renaissance architecture. With its elegant two-storey arched gallery, this stunning house is listed as a Historical Monument. As for its name, it's a mystery yet to be solved...
