The Comtesse Block

The legacy of Countess Jeanne

In 1237, Jeanne, Countess of Flanders, had a hospital built in her own palace, sparing neither the quality nor the richness of the supplies. She went so far as to give all her mills to the hospital to ensure its operation. This charitable foundation, which became the nearby Hospice Comtesse, lastingly marked the district, whose memory the Comtesse Block perpetuates today in a green setting.
