The Arab World Institute, a bridge between cultures
The Paris audio-guided tour lets you discover the Arab World Institute, a huge glass building dedicated to Arab civilisation. More than a museum, it is a multicultural space that brings France and the Arab world into dialogue through art, culture and knowledge.
Architecture inspired by mashrabiyas
Opened at the end of the 1980s, the institute is the work notably of the architect Jean Nouvel. Its south façade is made of thousands of metal diaphragms that open and close according to the light, in the manner of traditional mashrabiyas. This technical and aesthetic feat brings modernity and Oriental inspiration into dialogue, in a building that has become emblematic of Paris.
What there is to see
The institute offers high-quality permanent exhibitions, a library and many events throughout the year: performances, screenings and debates. Its terrace offers an exceptional view over the Seine, the Île de la Cité and Notre-Dame. It is a major cultural venue, at the crossroads of civilisations, by the river.
Practical information
The Arab World Institute is on Quai Saint-Bernard, by the Seine, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. It can be visited according to its own schedule; opening times and access conditions may vary with the exhibitions. The panoramic terrace is one of its highlights.
