Rue d'Italie and the Montmélian faubourg
The Chambéry audio-guided tour has you go up Rue d'Italie, one of the liveliest arteries of the city. A former faubourg open onto the road of the Alps, it keeps a commercial and popular atmosphere full of life.
The gateway towards Italy
Rue d'Italie owes its name to the direction it indicated: it was the road by which one left Chambéry towards the Alpine passes and the peninsula. The Montmélian faubourg, which extends it, developed outside the former limits of the city as a quarter of craftsmen and merchants. This past as a crossroads between France and Italy still marks the Savoyard identity of the city.
