The theatre was inaugurated in 1830, on the site of a former real-tennis court. Designed according to the model of the Italian-style hall, it offered the city a place dedicated to the performing arts. In 1927, a peristyle came to adorn its façade, giving it a more monumental appearance. After several decades of use, the building was renovated in 2008 in order to meet contemporary requirements while preserving its original character. It continues to host a varied programme, from theatre to music.
