The Lecoq garden, in Clermont-Ferrand
The Lecoq garden is the great public garden of the centre of Clermont-Ferrand, a peaceful English-style park appreciated by the Clermontois. The Clermont-Ferrand audio-guided tour stops here to evoke this setting of greenery created from 1863 by the botanist Henri Lecoq around a former botanical garden, with its rose garden, its pond and its open-air café, an oasis of freshness in the heart of the medieval district.
History
It is to the botanist Henri Lecoq that the city owes this garden, laid out from 1863 around a botanical garden that already occupied this site. Conceived first as the Garden of Plants of Clermont, it took in 1915 the form of the English-style garden that is known today, with its sinuous paths and its careful perspectives. The garden is composed of a fine rose garden, a pleasant pond around which it is pleasant to stroll, and an open-air café where to have a drink at the water's edge. A vast green space of five hectares in the very city centre, it is an unmissable place for the Clermontois, who come to stroll there, picnic or practise their sport. It brings a generous touch of greenery and freshness in the heart of the medieval district, a stone's throw from the museum that bears the same name, and remains one of the most appreciated green lungs of the city.
