Basque traditions

Euskara, an ancestral language

The Basques have their own language, Euskara, considered by some historians to be the oldest living language in Europe. It survived the Celts, the Greeks and the Latins, and is still passed down from generation to generation. It is divided into several dialects according to the provinces: the Basque Country has seven provinces, three in France, Labourd, Basse-Navarre and Soule, and four in Spain.

What to see

Beyond the language, Basque culture comes in many traditions: Basque pelota, dances, songs, the beret, Basque linen, and gastronomy with Bayonne ham, the Basque cake and Espelette pepper. So many symbols of a strong and still very much alive identity.
