Lumière Brothers’ Birthplace

You’re now standing near a car park, and just ahead, you’ll notice a white building with a commemorative plaque. The plaque is dedicated to the Lumière brothers, who were born in the first-floor apartment of this building, Auguste in 1862 and Louis in 1864. Although they were born in Besançon, the brothers later became closely associated to the city of Lyon. These two engineers and industrialists played a major role in the development of cinema and photography. Just to be clear, they didn’t actually invent cinema, but they were legendary pioneers. They introduced an early version of 3D film all the way back in 1935, and their brilliance didn’t end there. The Lumière brothers were also active in the medical field, holding over 190 patents and creating treatments still used today, including Tulle gras, a special dressing for burns. Two brilliant minds, born two years apart, who passed away six years apart, and today, they rest side by side in the same tomb in Lyon.
