The Beaune audio-guided tour reveals the Marie de Bourgogne Gate, one of the last fortified gates of the town. With its slender silhouette and its pointed roof covered with glazed tiles, it seems to come straight out of a history book.

A gate of the ramparts

Built in the 15th century, this tower was part of the ramparts that once protected Beaune. It marked the northern entrance to the town and served as much to watch the comings and goings as to impress visitors. Its name pays tribute to Marie de Bourgogne, daughter of Duke Charles the Bold and heiress of a then flourishing duchy, whose destiny was marked by an early death, following a fall from a horse.

The gate, with its roof of glazed tiles in the patterns characteristic of Burgundy, is a fine example of the medieval defensive architecture of Beaune. Its neighbouring former wine stores, from the 19th century, have been renovated to house cultural and tourist facilities. It is one of the historic entrances to the town, an ideal starting point to explore the centre.
