Place du Marché, the flavours of Bastia
The Bastia audio-guided tour takes you to Place du Marché, formerly called Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. Halfway between Place Saint-Nicolas and the Old Port, it has hosted the market stalls since 1880, in a warm, lively atmosphere.
A farmers' market since 1880
Every weekend, producers and inhabitants meet there to haggle, talk and exchange local products. It is the chance to taste the region's specialities: charcuterie, sardines, dentex and ewe's cheese are among the emblematic products of Bastia, as are panzarotti and fiadone for those who like sweets. The square is a concentrate of the Corsican art of living.
What there is to see
Beyond the market, the square is lined with fine buildings and looks onto the nearby Saint-Jean-Baptiste church. Its terraces and old façades make it a pleasant place to live, where you feel the pulse of the city. It is the ideal spot for a foodie break in the heart of the Terra Vecchia district.
