You don’t have to go far in Carnac to come across the stones that made the town famous! Take a look at this impressive standing stone right here in the center of town. This is the Menhir du Bourg.

It’s an authentic menhir, and it has even been protected as a historic monument since 1889. So people have known for a long time that, in Carnac, menhirs are serious business! But what does this mysterious word actually mean?

It comes from Breton: men means “stone,” and hir means “long.” A menhir is, quite simply, a “long stone,” set upright in the ground by Neolithic communities. Of course, that leaves the big question everyone asks: what were they for? After all, we’ve never seen Obelix put down his menhir and explain why on earth he spends all day carving them!

Were they places of worship dedicated to the sun or moon? Astronomical calendars used for farming? Boundary markers?

Funerary monuments? The theories are plentiful, but so far, none of them is set in stone—no pun intended! And that mystery is exactly what makes these stones so fascinating.
