For some, they’re just street names. For others, the names of theaters or public buildings. But before they were tied to places, these men and women were real people, figures who left a mark on French history and helped shape the story of Montauban. Whether their names sound familiar or not, here’s a quick look at a few of the remarkable individuals who once walked these same cobblestone streets. In the arts, two names stand out: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Antoine Bourdelle. Ingres, an 18th–19th-century painter, best known for his sensual, emotionally rich depictions of the female nude, always capturing the natural beauty of his models.He was also an accomplished musician, and his passion for the violin inspired the French expression “avoir un violon d’Ingres,” meaning to have a hidden talent or creative hobby on the side. Then there’s Bourdelle, a 19th–20th-century sculptor who worked closely with Rodin and Le Maître. His most iconic work, “Hercules the Archer,” even inspired the branding for the popular French school notebooks “Héraklès.” In the music world, we can’t forget Étienne Roda-Gil, a prolific songwriter behind hundreds of hits for French stars — from Vanessa Paradis and France Gall to Claude François, the original singer of the song that became My Way. And then there’s the bold, powerful voice of Olympe de Gouges, born Marie Gouze. A revolutionary writer and playwright, deeply involved in political struggles advocating for Black rights and gender equality. In 1791, she authored the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen, a fearless response to the male-centered ideals of the French Revolution. Her outspoken activism led to her execution by guillotine in 1793.
