Montpellier’s Arc de Triomphe

Paris isn’t the only French city with its own Arc de Triomphe! Montpellier has one too — and it’s just as grand. Perched on one of the city’s highest points, this triumphal arch was built in the 17th century at the request of Louis XIV, the Sun King himself. His goal? To celebrate his glory and decades of military victories. The spot wasn’t chosen by chance — it faces what was once the Royal Square, now the Peyrou Promenade. Designed by architect François d’Orbay and built in just a year, the arch stands 15 metres tall and is covered in symbols of royal power: medallions, inscriptions, and the king’s coat of arms in vivid blue. Look closely and you’ll spot scenes praising Louis XIV’s reign and a Latin inscription declaring him a bringer of peace after forty years of war. Officially listed as a historic monument in 1954, the arch was fully restored in 2003. And if you’re feeling energetic, climb the 90 steps to the top — the panoramic view over Montpellier is worth every one of them!
