Place Nationale

The Montauban audio-guided tour leads you to Place Nationale, the beating heart of the city since its creation in 1144. Lined with brick arcades, it is one of the finest squares of the South-West.

The merchant heart of the city

Since the foundation of Montauban, the square was the place where the communal rules were proclaimed and where commercial exchanges took place. Each couvert, or sheltered passage, bore the name of the goods that were traded there: couvert of Wheat, of the Drapers, of Fruits, of Clogs. A victim of two major fires in the seventeenth century, the square was altered several times, which explains the succession of its arcades of different sizes. Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light the Consular House, where the Consuls sat.
