Neptune fountain

You’re now in Assas Square — just a few steps from Place de Jaude. Take a closer look at the unusual white arch in front of you. It’s actually a fountain, and if you look inside, you’ll spot a striking golden statue of Neptune — the Roman god of water and springs. He’s the equivalent of Poseidon in Greek mythology. You’ll recognize him by his trident, his flowing beard, and wild hair — all classic features of the god of the sea. The statue was created in 1856 by the French sculptor Vital Gabriel Dubray. It stands in an artificial grotto that highlights the figure beautifully as you approach. Really, who better than the god of springs to decorate a fountain in the city?
