A great Romanesque church

Built from the 12th century, on the site of a former Carolingian church, the collegiate Basilica of Notre-Dame is among the last great Romanesque churches in Burgundy. Of Cluniac inspiration, it dates mostly from the 13th century, with later Gothic additions, such as the porch and the chevet. Its imposing silhouette and bell tower recall the time when Beaune was a major religious and commercial crossroads.

What there is to see

Inside, the long, majestic nave stretches under a stone vault, in Romanesque sobriety. The basilica preserves an exceptional set of 15th-century tapestries devoted to the life of the Virgin, one of its treasures. The porch, the bell tower and the chapels deserve attention, in respect of the place of worship and the prayer that takes place there.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame is on Place General-Leclerc, in the heart of the historic centre of Beaune. Access to the church is generally free outside services; hours may vary with the season and celebrations. An active place of worship, it requires proper dress and silence.
