Notre-Dame de Locmaria and Quiberon Museum “Between Land and Sea”

There’s no miraculous apparition or legendary divine intervention attached to this one, but there is a revealing little detail. The church was rebuilt between 1900 and 1902 on the site of the former cemetery, just as Quiberon was undergoing a dramatic transformation. The old fishing town was rapidly becoming a fashionable seaside resort, and that new world of tourism even made its way inside the church.

Take a look at the stained-glass windows. After a devastating explosion in the town center in 2018, they had to be restored to match the originals exactly. Among them is one known as the “Gift of the Bathers,” funded by the well-heeled visitors who came to spend their vacations in Quiberon.

In other words, the new seaside crowd quite literally left its mark on the local parish. For a much broader look at Quiberon’s past, head next door to Quiberon Museum “Between Land and Sea.” Spread across three floors, the museum explores everything from everyday life around 1900 to the tragic Royalist landing of 1795 and the many shipwrecks that have marked the peninsula’s history. It also introduces you to Beg-er-Vil, an exceptional prehistoric site farther south on the peninsula.

More than 8,000 years ago, hunter-gatherers lived there, leaving behind thousands of flint artifacts, hearths, and remarkably well-preserved objects. The site isn’t part of this route, but you can visit it on your own. Beg-er-Vil has become an important reference site for archaeologists across Europe, and the museum’s 3D reconstructions offer a fascinating glimpse into what life there may have looked like.

It’s a good reminder that people were settling along Quiberon’s shoreline thousands of years before swimsuits and seaside vacations ever entered the picture.
