This is La Rochelle's notorious Old Town, a historic district with unusual arcades housing the town's shops. The old town is very well preserved, thanks to the unfailing defence of the towers of the Old Port, and you'll come across a number of historic buildings here. Particularly busy during summer, when visitors flock to the area, it is also a festive place for students, who gather in the squares to drink and eat. Medieval houses and Renaissance architecture adorn the narrow streets, transforming this historic centre into a charming neighbourhood.
