The Montauban audio-guided tour presents you with the Olympe-de-Gouges theatre, at the heart of the cultural life of the city. It has presented itself in its current appearance since 1930, on the edge of Place Nationale.

From real tennis to the theatre

Before it, a first hall, laid out by the city in 1792, gathered the inhabitants around games of real tennis, ancestor of tennis. Transformed into a theatre, it knew such success that it was enlarged in the nineteenth century. After the terrible floods of 1930, Montauban received subsidies to rebuild, which gave the theatre a new façade, this time oriented towards the square. Like the majority of the buildings of the city, it is adorned with brick, with arcades, pilasters and mirandes that echo the neighbouring Place Nationale.

The theatre charms with its brick façade and its architecture in harmony with Place Nationale. It bears the name of Olympe de Gouges, a Montauban figure of the Revolution. Still in activity, it offers a varied programme of shows. It is a high place of the cultural life of Montauban, to be discovered during a performance.
