Place du Théâtre, opera and belfry

The Lille audio-guided tour invites you to take your time on the elegant Place du Théâtre, which marks the boundary between old Lille and the central districts. Sit down for a moment to admire the remarkable buildings that surround it.

A remarkable architectural ensemble

The square brings together several jewels: the Vieille Bourse, which separates it from the Grand-Place, the Opera of Lille and the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce. The Opera, in neoclassical style, and the neighbouring belfry were built at the beginning of the twentieth century, after the fire of the old theatre. The belfry of the Chamber of Commerce, slender, is inspired by the Flemish belfries, symbols of the communal freedoms of the North.

What there is to see

From the square, the gaze takes in the richly sculpted façade of the Opera, the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce and the back of the Vieille Bourse. The café terraces invite you to linger to examine the ornaments of these buildings. It is one of the finest urban settings of Lille, at the junction of the old district and the modern centre.

Practical information

Place du Théâtre is in the heart of Lille, between the Grand-Place and old Lille. It is a public space freely accessible at all hours and on the level. The Opera welcomes the public according to its programme; the façades can be contemplated freely from the square.
