Oratory of the Immaculate Conception

You’re now standing in front of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, or rather, the Oratory of the Immaculate Conception, as its size is more modest than that of a typical church. It’s officially listed as a Historic Monument and is one of Bastia’s architectural treasures. While the exterior may appear quite simple at first glance, take a closer look and you’ll notice the elegant baroque entrance that hints at the grandeur inside. If the doors are open when you pass by, feel free to step in! Inside, you’ll be treated to a stunning display of Genoese artistry: gilded stucco, silk hangings, velvet drapery, carved walnut choir stalls, and magnificent chandeliers from Genoa. The oratory also houses a 17th-century altarpiece and several remarkable paintings, all part of a rich and ornate interior that stands in striking contrast to the plain façade. Just in front of the entrance, look down, and you’ll also notice a beautiful pebble mosaic, a fine example of Genoese craftsmanship that forms the oratory’s forecourt. Together, these elements make this little building a true gem in Bastia’s historic heart.
