Peyrolerie Street

We've now reached Peyrolerie Street; its name alone whispers of Provence's rich past. Mind you, in Provençal, "peyrou" means "cauldron". So the name is quite fitting, since it was here on this street that they practiced the craft of boilermaking back in the Middle Ages. Boilermakers craft equipment from sheet metals such as steel, lead, copper and nowadays stainless steel. They'd take the metals and work them into shapes that matched their future use. That's still the case today, as this trade continues to exist. But back to our street. Carved into the Rocher des Doms, the city's rocky outcrop, it is considered the most picturesque thoroughfare in Avignon, offering a glimpse into the city's medieval past. Just close your eyes and picture yourself walking the streets back in the olden days. On your right, you'll see the Palace of the Popes, stretching above you. One can’t help but feel humbled by its imposing presence and long history! On that note, we'll take a left here and head for St. Peter's Basilica.
