An esplanade for tournaments

The creation of Place de la Carrière, in the sixteenth century, was made possible by the enlargement of the medieval ramparts of the Old Town. Brand new, this esplanade was quickly used for carousels and chivalric tournaments, hence its name. In the eighteenth century, Stanislas and his architect Héré integrated it into their great urban project, lining it with fine façades and rows of trees.

What there is to see

Place de la Carrière unfolds a long perspective lined with harmonious private mansions and rows of trimmed trees, closed in the distance by the Government Palace. Quieter than Place Stanislas, it offers an elegant and restful walk. It hosts in particular, each September, the fair Le Livre sur la Place. It is an essential link of the UNESCO-listed ensemble.

Place de la Carrière is in the extension of Place Stanislas, beyond the Héré Arch, in Nancy. It is a public space freely accessible at all hours and on the level. It is part of the ensemble listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
