Place du Pilori

Pilori Square is a small square in the centre of Angers. This picturesque pedestrianised square is very busy, with many shops and restaurants. On your right is a statue called The Young Girl in Town, created in 1988 by Léopold Kreitz and installed here in 1992. It bears this name because this was the site of the pillory, an instrument of torture on which a convicted person was tied for several hours or days to be displayed to the public in a bid to deter potential criminals. Nowadays, the square is lined with houses dating back to the Renaissance and marks the entrance to the hypercentre. In December, you'll find Christmas market stalls, and in June, a number of bands come to play at the Music Festival.
