Place Saint-Nicolas

Place Saint-Nicolas is one of the most charming and picturesque squares in Auxerre, located at the point where the Yonne river quays meet the old town. Walk to your right and head towards the fountain in the center for a closer look. Surrounded by colourful half-timbered houses, small bars, and restaurants, this square is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink by the water. In the past, boatmen used to unload their cargo here before it was shipped to other cities. Opposite the fountain stands a statue of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of boatmen. This 18th-century statue is a symbol of the city’s prosperity at the time, which is why Auxerre’s port was once called Port Saint-Nicolas. With its village-like charm and riverside setting, Place Saint-Nicolas is a favourite among locals and visitors.
