The Saint-Laurent gate

A stop on the Grenoble audio-guided tour, the Saint-Laurent gate was one of the five gates of the seventeenth-century rampart. Built in 1615, it was the access gate towards Savoy, through the Gresivaudan valley.

A remnant of the fortifications

It was saved from the demolition of the rampart by being integrated into General Haxo's new fortification. Of the Lesdiguieres rampart, only two gates remain: this one and the Porte de France, at the foot of the Dauphins garden. Until 1864, the city gates were closed from ten in the evening to seven in the morning, except that of Saint-Laurent, which opened from five.

What to see

One of the last examples of seventeenth-century defensive architecture, the Saint-Laurent gate has been listed as a historic monument since 1931. Observe its fine silhouette, a witness to Grenoble's fortified past, on Place Saint-Laurent.
