Poul Person Fountain and Washhouse

Just below the museum, you’ll find the Poul Person fountain and washhouse tucked away from view. Here’s a quick Breton lesson: poul means a “water hole” or “pond,” while person refers to the parish priest. So you’re standing beside what is, quite simply, the “parish priest’s pond,” probably once used by the nearby rectory, which now houses the Prehistory Museum.

Like all communal washhouses, this one wasn’t just a place to do laundry. It was also a gathering spot, where people talked and caught up on local news while carrying out the long, demanding work of washing clothes by hand. It offers a glimpse of a much more everyday side of Carnac’s history, far removed from the menhirs and grand monuments, but just as revealing of daily life in the past.
