Prehistory Museum

You’ve arrived at the Prehistory Museum. The world’s first museum dedicated exclusively to megalithic culture, it houses one of the richest prehistoric collections in Europe. This is where you start to get a clearer picture of the people who built these extraordinary stone monuments.

Outside, the megaliths are impressive, but they can’t tell us much on their own. Inside, tools, pottery, jewelry, and objects found in the tombs tell us more about the communities that created them. You might be surprised to learn that Neolithic Carnac was far from a quiet, isolated outpost.

In fact, it was a hub of exchange. Among the museum's prized artifacts are large jade axes from the Alps and polished ornaments from the Iberian Peninsula. These objects traveled hundreds of kilometers to reach Carnac in the early 5th millennium BCE, proving that this was once a thriving center of wealth and power, deeply connected to far-reaching trade networks.

The museum itself has a rather remarkable history. It begins in the 19th century with James Miln, a Scotsman with a passion for antiquities who came to Carnac to study its famous megaliths. After his excavations, the objects he uncovered were initially stored and displayed in his hotel room!

When Miln died, his brother had a proper museum built so the collections could be donated to the town. His work was later continued by Zacharie Le Rouzic, a major local figure in archaeology. He excavated and restored numerous monuments, greatly expanded the collections, and devoted much of his life to protecting Carnac’s heritage.

Today, the museum bears the names of these two pioneers. If all this has sparked your interest, don’t miss the chance to visit. Housed in the former rectory, the collection spans an astonishing 450,000 years of human history, with the Neolithic period and megalithic culture at its heart.

As you step back outside, you’ll find that the standing stones you once passed by now tell a much more vivid story.
