President Wilson Square

This is perhaps the busiest spot in Toulouse; there's a subway station, stores, cinemas, restaurants and shopping streets all around. This is President Wilson Square. It is named after the former President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, who was an important ally of France in the WWI. In 1918, the mayor of Toulouse, known as Jean le rouge (John the Red), declared the American president an honorary citizen of the city. The construction plan called for the square to be built in an oval shape with streets branching out in a star pattern and uniform façades, housing ground-floor shops. You see, this square was predestined to be a meeting place! It’s the real hub of the city, celebrating the Toulousian poet Pierre Goudouli with the garden and beautiful fountain before you dedicated to him.
