The Guérande audio-guided tour takes you before the manor of the Provostry, a historic building hidden behind a large red gate, one of the rare private mansions so well preserved in the city.

The dwelling of the provost

Built in the sixteenth century, the manor was the residence of the provost of Guérande, an officer in charge of the administration of the city and of justice. The provost generally belonged to the wealthy families of the city and could thus live in fine private mansions like this one. Restored in the nineteenth century to give it back its former splendour, the manor of the Provostry is one of the rare examples still visible of such a well-preserved residential building in Guérande.

What there is to see

Standing back a little from the gate, one glimpses the top of the building: its staircase tower on the right, its dormer window on the façade, and one can make out the inner courtyard located just after the entrance. The manor illustrates the elegance of the dwellings of notables of the Guérande of the past and completes the discovery of the rich civil heritage of the medieval city.
