Protestant Church of Saint-Thomas

There's more to Strasbourg than its cathedral! The Protestant church of St. Thomas is a magnificent example of Alsatian Gothic art. Construction began in the 11th century. It was rebuilt several times after all the troubles a church might encounter over the centuries, from fires to conflicts. It's the only hall church in the region. In Germany, they're fairly common. What we call a hall church is when the central nave and side aisles are of equal height. This really gives it a majestic, yet airy feel. You can go and see for yourself – admission is free of charge. Here you'll find the mausoleum of Maurice, Count of Saxony, considered a masterpiece of 18th-century Baroque funerary art. The church was listed as a historical monument in 1862.
