At the beginning of the thirteenth century, Raimond-Roger Trencavel was the young viscount of Béziers and Carcassonne, lord of a vast territory of Languedoc. When the crusade against the Albigensians was launched, directed against the Cathars and their protectors, his lands were targeted. Béziers was the first great town attacked and fell in 1209, during a terrible sack that marked the spirits. The young viscount then took refuge in Carcassonne, which had to capitulate; taken prisoner, he died shortly after in the dungeons, at a very young age. Having become a symbol of the resistance of Languedoc against the crusade, Raimond-Roger Trencavel is honoured by this fresco.
