Place du Ralliement
The Angers audio-guided tour leads you to Place du Ralliement, a central square where bars, restaurants and shops sit side by side. A lively place today, it also bears the memory of a dark page in the city's history, evoked here with gravity.
A square born of the Revolution
Originally, three churches stood here, destroyed in the 18th century, which allowed the creation of this new square. During the Revolution, it became a major gathering place: it was here that the guillotine was set up and many death sentences were carried out, in a tragic period. It is also the place where conscripts and soldiers rallied, which earned it, in 1791, the name of Place du Ralliement.
What there is to see
Today, Place du Ralliement is one of the liveliest in Angers, dominated by the municipal theatre and its fine facades. While it beats to the rhythm of commercial and cultural life, its history invites a moment of contemplation for the victims of the Revolution. The square remains a central gathering place, as it has always been.
Practical information
Place du Ralliement can be seen freely, in the open air, in the heart of the centre of Angers, on the tram route. It is accessible at any time. Cafes, restaurants, shops and the theatre line the square and follow their own hours. It is a central landmark for finding your way around the city.
