Renaissance Facade

Pause for a moment and look to your right, just behind the gate in front of you. In this little courtyard stands a remarkable piece of history—a Renaissance-era façade that likely dates back to the mid-16th century, possibly around the 1540s. Though weathered by time, it’s a beautiful example of the kind of architecture you would have seen during that period. Interestingly, this façade didn’t originally stand here—it’s believed to have been moved several times within the city before finally being placed in this spot. Not much is known about its exact origins, but you can still admire the decorative frieze running across it, where sculpted figures are delicately carved. Despite the mystery surrounding its past, the façade has been officially recognized for its historical value and was listed as a Historic Monument in 1993. It’s a rare and charming glimpse into Épernay’s Renaissance heritage.
