A 15th-century watchtower

The tower was built between 1465 and 1477, a period when the Dukes of Burgundy were rearming their main strongholds. It was an integral part of the northern rampart and served as a watchtower. Its circular shape allowed it to better absorb projectiles and to offer a clear view of the surroundings; soldiers were posted there, ready to defend the town. The origin of its name, Renard, remains uncertain.

What there is to see

The Renard Tower, massive and circular, is among the best-preserved elements of the ramparts of Beaune. With other towers and gates, it lets you imagine the enclosed town of the Middle Ages, when the Dukes of Burgundy made it a stronghold. It can be seen during the walk along the former fortifications, which still partly ring the centre.

The Renard Tower can be seen freely, in the open air, along the northern ramparts of Beaune. It is visible at any time, during the walk around the historic centre. It is a quick stop, with no fee, for lovers of medieval heritage and fortifications.
