The Roman road

A genuine remnant of the Roman period, this stone road is a notable stop on the Vienne audio-guided tour. It once led to large warehouses built on the banks of the Rhone in the first century, more than two thousand years ago.

Vienne, capital of the Allobroges

Discovered during the landscaping of the Jardin de Ville, this road bears witness to the important Roman city that Vienne was. It was the capital of the Allobroges, a vast territory stretching from the Isere to Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Four to eight metres wide and slightly domed for water drainage, these roads formed the road network of Gaul.

What to see

Thanks to this road network, trade developed across the Roman Empire, strengthening its power. Paradoxically, these same roads later facilitated invasions. Observe this remarkably preserved example of the roads that linked the cities of Roman Gaul.

Practical information

The Roman road can be seen in the Jardin de Ville of Vienne, near the Rhone. Freely accessible during the garden's opening hours, it is observed along the walk.
