The collegiate church of Saint-Aubin

The Guérande audio-guided tour invites you to quiet contemplation before the collegiate church of Saint-Aubin, the main church of the medieval city. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1840, it testifies to the role of Guérande as a great religious centre in the Middle Ages.

Centuries of reconstructions

A first church is said to have been built at this site as early as the sixth century. In the tenth century, a new church, dedicated to Saint Aubin, patron saint of the city and former bishop of Angers, replaced it. Rebuilt in Romanesque style three centuries later, it was seriously damaged during the sack of Guérande in 1342: only its nave and its pillars survived, requiring a new reconstruction, this time in flamboyant Gothic. Stained-glass windows were added in the sixteenth century, and the building underwent several restorations after storms in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

What there is to see

Inside, in contemplation, the visitor discovers a vast flamboyant Gothic vessel, its stained-glass windows and, in the Marguerite chapel, the Treasure of the collegiate church, a set of liturgical garments and goldsmithery that recalls the prestige of the place. Legend has it that Saint Aubin, a native of the Guérande country, once saved the city from a threat by sending a white knight. A place of faith and memory, the collegiate church can be discovered with respect.
