Saint-Eloi Church

Right across the street from the belfry stands Saint-Eloi Church. Originally, the church and the tower were connected, but after a devastating fire, only part of the church was rebuilt — funds ran out before the two could be joined again. The current building, constructed in the 16th century in flamboyant Gothic style, has endured many challenges over the centuries, especially during the wars of the 20th century. Its façade, dating back to 1894, still bears the scars of conflict — if you look closely, you can see bullet marks that remain to this day. Nicknamed the “Cathedral of the Sands,” Saint-Eloi Church is listed as a Historic Monument in Dunkirk. Step inside, and you’ll find the tomb of Jean Bart, the city’s legendary privateer, resting in the choir.
