Saint-Esprit temple

Just to your right is the Saint-Esprit temple. Although people walk past it every day, it often flies under the radar, despite its long and fascinating history. It served as a hospital run by a religious order from the Middle Ages up until the early modern era. But this wasn’t just any hospital. It cared for the sick, but also for orphans, pregnant women, the elderly, and beggars. In short, anyone considered “weak” by society at the time. By 1797, the building had been completely abandoned. It found new life 45 years later as a Protestant church, which it remains today. If you step into the courtyard, don’t miss the wooden gallery dating back to the 16th century. The intricate carved details are a beautiful example of the craftsmanship of the time.
