The church of Saint-Gimer

Below the City, the Carcassonne audio-guided tour brings you to the church of Saint-Gimer, in the Barbacane district. More recent than the neighbouring fortifications, it remains a place of worship to be approached with respect and calm.

A church by Viollet-le-Duc

The present church was built only between 1854 and 1859, by Viollet-le-Duc, on the site of a former barbican so dilapidated that it was decided to raze it. It is dedicated to Saint Gimer, bishop of Carcassonne between 903 and 932, known for his charity towards the poor. A first church had been dedicated to him in the 11th century, on Rue Barbacane, on the site of his birthplace; having become too small, it was replaced by the present building.

What there is to see

The church displays the Gothic style characteristic of Viollet-le-Duc and preserves inside part of the decoration of the former building, transferred during its reconstruction. Listed as a Historic Monument, it is a fine testimony to the work of the famous 19th-century architect, at the foot of the ramparts he also restored.

Practical information

The church of Saint-Gimer is on Place Saint-Gimer, in the Barbacane district, below the Porte d'Aude. It is an active place of worship: opening times may vary and respectful behaviour is expected. Access on foot from the City follows a steeply sloping street.
