Saint-Jacques Church

Saint-Jacques church was built between the 12th and 16th centuries on the remains of a previous chapel, and owes its existence to the Archbishop of Rouen. As a result of its location on the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela by sea, Saint-Jacques is immense and has been remodelled several times over the years. Its architectural features reflect various styles from different eras, with a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. In addition to its 16th-century radiating chapels and beautiful rose window, the place of worship features an artistic frieze depicting the indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia and America that navigators may have encountered during their explorations. Saint-Jacques church is an aesthetic setting of great ethnographic interest, that inspired the writer Victor Hugo. It is undoubtedly a must-see site in Dieppe, which was listed as a historic monument in 1840.
