A sanctuary born from the wars of religion
Here we are, with respect, in front of the Cathedral of Saint-Louis. A place of worship exists at this location since the twelfth century, but the building you see is not so old, for its history is intimately linked to the religious upheavals of the town. The first church that rose here was destroyed in the course of the sixteenth century, during the wars of religion, when La Rochelle had become one of the great strongholds of French Protestantism. A vast Protestant temple was then rebuilt in its place, then transformed into a Catholic cathedral a few years later, after the famous siege of the town by Richelieu in 1628. But this building was in turn destroyed at the end of the seventeenth century, accidentally this time. It was necessary to wait until the eighteenth century to undertake the construction of the present cathedral, a long-term project that spread over more than a century. The result is a great building of classical style, with a sober and monumental façade rhythmed by columns, very different from the Gothic cathedrals. Inside, in the calm conducive to contemplation, you discover a vast luminous nave, a dome, fine mural paintings, notably by Bouguereau, and chapels.
