The church of Saint-Louis

A contemplative stop on the Grenoble audio-guided tour, the church of Saint-Louis was built in the seventeenth century at the request of the bishop of Grenoble, Monseigneur Le Camus, who wished for new parishes at the heart of the developing districts.

Two churches for two parishes

The bishop had two churches built: this one, inside the fortifications, and another outside the ramparts, the present church of Saint-Joseph. Sober, the church of Saint-Louis follows the classical and Baroque influences of the time. It is dedicated to Saint Louis, patron saint of Louis XIV and protector of France, marking the bishop's attachment to his monarch.

What to see

Inside are a sixteenth-century white marble Virgin, a seventeenth-century pulpit and confessionals, and an eighteenth-century high altar. The more recent stained-glass windows are the work of a Grenoble master glassmaker. Enter this place of worship with quiet and respect for silence.
