The basilica of Saint-Martin

A major place of devotion, the basilica of Saint-Martin is a solemn stop on the Tours audio-guided tour. It was built between 1887 and 1902 by the architect Victor Laloux, who designed the town hall and the station.

The rediscovery of the relics

The Romanesque basilica had been destroyed during the Revolution. But in 1860, the discovery of the relics of Saint Martin in the crypt led to the rebuilding of a church. There was hesitation between an identical reconstruction and a more restrained work. This second path, in Romanesque-Byzantine style, was chosen.

What to see

The ornaments and stained-glass windows are entirely devoted to Saint Martin: the windows depict the key moments of his life and of the history of the Church in Europe. In the crypt lies a reconstruction of his tomb. At the top of the dome, his statue blesses the city. The visit calls for quiet and respect for the place.
