A contemplative stop on the Vienne audio-guided tour, the cathedral of Saint-Maurice recalls the city's essential role in the history of Christianity. Vienne acquired a cathedral very early, as far back as the year 314.

Four centuries of construction

Several buildings succeeded one another on this site. The present cathedral was begun in the twelfth century and took more than four centuries to complete, thus blending Romanesque and Gothic styles in its nave and choir. Consecrated by Pope Innocent IV in 1251, its facade was built in the sixteenth century.

What to see

During the wars of religion, its stained-glass windows and sculptures were destroyed by the Huguenots. The building served as a hay loft and a barracks during the Revolution, and lost cloisters, chapels and its north tower, victim of a fire in 1869. Enter this history-laden place of worship with quiet and respect.
