The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire
Within the Medieval City, the Carcassonne audio-guided tour leads you to the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse. A jewel of the upper town, this sanctuary still devoted to worship invites contemplation; one enters with respect for the place and the silence that reigns there.
From Romanesque to Gothic
It is thought that a first cathedral existed as early as the 6th century, later destroyed. The present building was constructed in the 12th century in a Romanesque style, then reworked between the 12th and 14th centuries, which gives it a skilful blend of Romanesque and Gothic: the Romanesque choir was thus replaced by a Gothic one. Cathedral of Carcassonne until 1801, it then gave up this title to the church of Saint-Michel in the lower town, before receiving that of basilica in 1898.
What there is to see
The first building restored by Viollet-le-Duc during the great renovation of the City, the basilica was saved thanks to Prosper Merimee, who listed it as a Historic Monument as early as 1840 when the demolition of the City was being considered. Inside, the Romanesque nave, the Gothic choir and the stained-glass windows deserve attention. One notes the contrast between Romanesque sobriety and Gothic elevation, with respect for the place of worship.
Practical information
The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire is on Place Saint-Nazaire, in the heart of the City. It can usually be visited freely, except during special events; opening times may vary with the season and services. As an active place of worship, proper dress and quiet behaviour are expected.
Why is it no longer a cathedral ?
It lost its cathedral title in 1801 to the church of Saint-Michel, in the fast-growing lower town, then was raised to the rank of basilica in 1898.
Who saved the basilica from demolition ?
Prosper Merimee listed it as a Historic Monument in 1840, which allowed its preservation and its restoration by Viollet-le-Duc.
