Saint Peter Church

You are now on the forecourt of Saint Peter Church. Currently at the heart of Old Bordeaux, it marks the site of the city's ancient Gallo-Roman port. In 1832, during archaeological excavations beneath the square, a bronze statue of Hercules was found, surely it must have adorned the entrance to the port. You can see it in the Aquitaine Museum. As for the church, it was built between the 14th and 15th centuries before being completely remodelled in the 19th century. Its flamboyant Gothic portal, south door and chancel are all original. You can take a tour of the interior if you wish, to discover its beautiful, delicately sculpted pointed vaults and large stained glass windows. The church also hosts a 17th-century wooden piéta. Once you've finished your visit, head back to Argentiers street to continue your discovery of Bordeaux.
